Rheumatoid Arthritis vs Osteoarthritis

RA is an autoimmune disease, it occurs when your body attacks itself. In people with RA, the immune system sees the synovium, the lining around the joints, as a threat much like a virus or bacteria and attacks it. This attack causes fluid to accumulate within the joint. When this occurs it causes swelling, pain, stiffness, and inflammation around your joints. There is no age discrimination for RA. There is even a juvenile form of the disease. It mainly affects women, but can affect men.

OA, is a degenerative joint disease. It is the most common form of arthritis. People with OA experience a breakdown of the cartilage that cushions the joints. This causes your bones to grind against each other exposing nerves, which causes pain. OA does not involve the immune like RA does, but mild inflammation also occurs. OA usually occurs as one ages and affects both men and woman alike. Certain occupations put you at a higher risk for OA.
